Fabrics We Like AND Technical Tawk
This week we talked about fabrics we love, designers and fabric houses and a little bit about how we use them!
And in our chat on blogging, we talked about technical issues like how we upload photos, what applications are available to help us write and format posts and pics and other little tidbits. There's always something to learn.

Linda, I adore that fabric! I sure wish I had a need for it and enough money to buy it! Joni, I think I've commented on your blog before that some of your pictures never load on my computer. (I have tried taking a shower while they are loading, and when I come back the ones at the bottom of the post still haven't loaded for me. (I think our area has a slow provider, so that may be the problem). Joni told me about LiveWriter some time ago, but I agree with you 2 that Joni's photos are worth waiting on. Mine aren't. I knew I would loose any readership I had if people had to wait to see what I had posted. I do go into HTML and enlarge all of my photos after I upload them to my blog, and I don't think any of the quality is lost. Some readers have to adjust their resolution on their computer to a higher level in order to see the entire photo on my blog (on a lower resolution only 3/4 of the photo might show), which is why I considered switching to LiveWriter. I wonder if anyone has that problem with Joni's photos, or if that is somehow taken care of by LiveWriter. Very interesting discussion. As always, ya'll are so far ahead of me in your blogging and your decorating that I don't leave here without learning a lot. Thank you. I know this is already too long, and I've asked this before, but I really would like to know why ya'll use the "word verification" feature. I've never used it on my blog, and I've always wondered about it, since I often struggle a little when typing the "word". laurie

Very much enjoyed both pod casts. You guys really have me wondering now if folks have to wait forever for my posts/blog to load. I purchased a new HP laptop about 2 years ago and it is REALLY fast> Plus, I pay to have the fastest high speed internet Comcast offers here in the Atlanta area and it is lighting fast, so blogs like Joni's load pretty much instantaneously for me...no waiting. I use a lot of pics in my posts, like Joni and I enlarge them...so now I'm really wondering what the majority of my readers are experiencing when visiting my blog. I guess I could cut down on the number of pics, but isn't that what people really love when they visit a blog? Ummmm, what to do?Susan
I don't have the fabric gene. I love it after it's been picked out or at least narrowed down. But I get "the vapors" after about 10 minutes in a fabric store. It's so expensive to buy and to turn into something usable that I think you need a pro to make fabric decisions.
The best pros manage the client's expectations and tolerance level, while picking great fabrics that fit the budget.
It's funny though. I do have an inordinate appreciation of fabrics from my childhood growing up in High Point. For ladies in my mom's generation the hunt for fabrics was a lifelong journey. It was like a High Point pastime. Everybody knew nearly everybody in the business. Getting the word about outlets, overruns, discontinued fabric, friends who'd changed their minds and had some available... It was a big deal, a constant source of conversion, and a game of pride in one-upsmanship.
It wasn't until I got a lot older that I began to understand.

I'm a huge unlined linen fan for curtains because I just love opening my windows/ doors and seeing them blow a bit in the breeze. I also love how the light shines through a bit and exposes the nubs & nuances of the fabric. In my own living room I even left the edges of my white linen curtains unturned... they have that raw edge & I love it. (it was initally inspired by my laziness because I did them myself, hahah)

Joni, I'm not sure if you know, but on my screen which is 1024x768, your bigger pictures are cut off on the right side. No problem with higher resolutions. On my wife's wide-screen, no problem.
Your blog isn't the only one.
I'll be reading about some slip covered chairs in a picture and those chairs aren't in the picture! If I click on the picture, it will enlarge so I can see the chairs. This doesn't happen for all of you pictures but there are a few in nearly every post.
Live Writer may let you build for a minimum screen resolution to keep you safe. Live Writer should take care of you.
If you ever go to a stand-alone tool like Live Writer, it's mighty hard to go back. I think Joni's head would explode if she had to create her posts with Blogger. We don't want that.
Ladies, don't assume that everyone has to wait for Joni's blog to load. I read it every day...(ha ha even when she hasn't posted...) and even on my friend's dial-up, it's perfect. I've never had to wait for it to load. I also believe that a 'please be patient while my blog loads' warning is a kiss of death...people will assume it will take forever and take off...running the other way, to another blog! I am going to give Live Writer another try. I tried it before, but I think I was having nicotine withdrawels at that time..ha..
I have to wait sometimes but it's predictable and it take me more than a day to digest them anyway. You can certainly have a connection at some offices that is much faster than the fastest home connection. And it can vary by region, time of day, network clogging, and luck.
I adore that fabric. I have some really large pillows made out of it in my guest room {currently my guest is our 24 yr. old "back home"} and I love it so much, I don't think I will ever get rid of them, I will just move them around the house once I get bored. :)

If I have an extra-long post, like the ones for Movie Mondays, I use the "more" option to put it on two pages. In other words, only the first three or so photos show on the front page, and readers have to click "more" to see the rest. Otherwise there's a lot of scrolling down-down-down involved to see the other posts. I don't think that's an option in Blogger, though.
I guess I need to try this Live Writer since I keep hearing about it. At least for my Blogger blog, which is such a pain to upload photos into! WordPress is much easier.
I LEARNED FABRICS AND THEIR COLORS ARE WHERE YOU START THE DESIGNING PROCESS. I HAD TROUBLE KEEPING UP WITH ALL THE NAMES, PROBABLY BECAUSE THE NAMES ARE FOREIGN TO ME. THANK YOU FOR THE ROUND TABLE-BEST WISHES FROM AN AVID LISTENER.
I use live writer for my main blog and blogger for my "little" blog. it's getting harder and harder to use blogger.
Joni - I don't believe your blog or photos are the problem. I read your blog daily and have two computers to use and never encounter any problems with the photos loading. At home I have Comcast high-speed, but find I have no difficulty with any other ISPs if out at a coffee shop, etc.

I have used silk draperies in homes that have a view of the water as well as using linen at the beach. Both are beautiful. Isn't it wonderful that we have so many options!
