The Skirted Roundtable on Digital Shelter Magazines PLUS a One King's Lane Shopping Spree Giveaway!!

artwork courtesy of TSevis

On this week's podcast, Joni, Megan and Linda chatted about the state of digital Shelter Magazines-how they are to read, the big ones vs. little, their business models and how the heck does one remember to virtually pick it up again if it's not sitting on the coffee table?? [Note: there is a great business idea in there for some enterprising person...]

Among the publications we talked about are: Lonny, Rue, Nesting Newbies, High Gloss (launching 2011), Anthology, Sweet Paul, Ivy & Piper, Covet Garden, Array, Pure Green Living, Matchbook Magazine (launching 2011), Pigtown*Design and ::Surroundings::.

Ironically, while chatting about new media and technology, we had several technological problems of our own. First Joni crashed, so Megan and Linda chatted about without her. Then Joni came back on, and Linda crashed. Linda makes the recordings, so we lost much of what we recorded. So we postponed till the next night. So, this is all to say that this recording is a little more disjointed than others because we couldn't remember what we'd previously discussed. We also found it harder to maintain focus on the conversation thread without the magazines in our hands-which we thought was telling.

Perhaps some of the beautiful picture frames on the site would be my pick. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity and your wonderful podcasts. I appreciate the work you put into them!

I was not aware of all the digital shelter magazines that are now available. I will be paying them a visit. I am already a member of One Kings Lane and would love a new throw to cozy up my house for the winter.
I would love to try those yummy candles or a cashmere throw !

I just love the new digital way of reading magazines...especially Surroundings a of course! I haven't seen Anthology and Sweet Paul so thanks for telling me about them.

Best wishes,
Natasha.
Hi ladies!

This was such a treat to listen to. Just had to let you know that Anthology is in fact a beautiful PRINT magazine! The 16 pages you speak of were simply a teaser on their website. Judging by your positive reaction to it you will absolutely adore the full hard copy edition (124 well-edited, handsome matte pages).

Thank you so much for the link to Matchbook. We thought we'd leave the "shelter" genre to Lonny and Rue and instead plan to emphasize lifestyle (fashion, beauty, travel, culture and perhaps one interior for good measure). We also look forward to publishing smaller, dare I say "modest" monthly issues as opposed to the gargantuan bi-monthly model. I think smaller, more frequent bites will be a nice change of pace and hopefully easier to digest and savor. Thank you so very much for this wealth of feedback for budding editors like myself!

Best,
Katie Armour

Great giveaway.

Aw, despite the tech problems, I love every installment! Thanks, ladies!

My One Kings Lane pick isn't all that exciting...I love the Mascot stuff for dogs. I'd buy a new collar & leash set for my golden retriever and then tuck the rest away for an impulse purchase. :)

Love the Thornwillow stationery at One Kings Lane, although there is practically nothing I do not love there. Love their offerings on linens, as well. Wonderful website!

Hi y'all! Thanks for the mention of Pigtown*Design magazine. I am just finishing up the Holiday/Winter issue.

As for OKL, anything cashmere catches my eye, as well as several of the wonderful books. I always anticipate their e-mails to see what goodies they're featuring.

I just got a package from them - Bunny Williams' new book - and it even came with a little present: a sweet frame!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I love One Kings Way. Just last night I was wanting those lovely linen round tablecloths for me and the Irish linen placemats and napkins as gifts for friends. Wanting/wishing. I also love their offerings of old alabaster lamps as well as unique tall vintage lamps. My recent purchases came with gifts from OKW. New to your site but will be returning frequently -- great podcasts and coverage of shelter mags. Thanks!

I, too, would love to have a go at a cashmere throw!

I confess to looking forward to every single offering from Lonny and Rue, as well as Linda's e-mag and a couple of others. Can't help myself. But still wish I had it in book form to thumb through time after time when I have a few spare minutes to while away.

Today on One Kings Lane I am loving the Mascot accessories for pooches and could easily exhaust my winnings on new leashes and doggy coats for my very special Chihuahua, Carson.

Happy Thanksgiving, girls!!!
Has it really been a year?? Happy Birthday to you three. You provide me with lots of entertainment when I'm at my desk working. I turn on your podcast and work away, nodding and laughing as I go. Wonderful interviews!

As for the generous giveaway... I am tempted by OKL every morning with their emails! Right now, I'd probably go for one of those adorable Steiff bears! Something to hug when I'm holiday stressed!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Thank you for mentioning High Gloss! I really enjoyed this podcast and agree with so many of the points that you all made. We have been very cognizant of these criticisms since our inception and are working very hard to create a magazine that is different from the existing ones. High Gloss is a more of a lifestyle publication and we will focus on interiors, fashion, entertaining, and travel, providing "a guide to a well-lived life".

Joni, it's interesting that you mentioned we might focus more on Southern and Western style because that is certainly part of our focus. We definitely want to offer a print option, though you'll notice with Lonny, etc the price per issue is high at the moment. We want to keep the length of our magazine palatable since it is a digital mag and will most likely end up between 130-150 pages of really high-quality content. We have some very exciting features planned!

We can't wait to share our first issue with you in January and are honored that you mentioned High Gloss today. Thank you, ladies!

Ladies,

Extending to you and your families a wish for a wonderful, peace filled Thanksgiving.

I have enjoyed being able to view the shops at One Kings Lane for some time, now.

Several unique items items at One Kings Lane stood out to me, on this viewing. The Footed Glass Chocolate Truffle Stand - vintage, clear and a rectangle beauty. I do like clear glass. The Tufted Cashmere Throw, in Grey/Ivory classic sophistication with an air of romance. Cashmere Bedspread with Suede, Coral with its air of gracious simplicity. (lovely color blending)

Kindly,
CJF

I love the accessibility of online shelter mags, but still prefer printed material just because I find it more satisfying to hold it in my hand. Maybe it's better on a digital reader device?

As for One King's Lane, who knows what they'll have when you're giveaway is actually rewarded, but if I were going to buy something today I think I'd choose some of the Archipelago candles!

Hi Ladies: A couple of points to add to your discussion...I agree with Megan - I love mags and love holding and reading them...how will I know when to look at a digital mag??? Also, I love Linda's e-zine BECAUSE it is short - I just read through Rue's second issue and OMG, it went on and on...I thought, wow, how many features are they going to do?? it was almost TOO long. The smaller issues can be read and devoured in a shorter amount of time.

As for OKL, I love Gail DeLoach's pillows - gorgeous...and the Three Designing Women stationary (the one on the top of the page matches my blog colors!) - thanks for the giveaway!

Hello, regarding the magazines, I don't think I'd get as much enjoyment from the online versions. I like looking thru mine over and over and there is something calming in flipping thru the pages.

As to OKL, I would love any of the cashmere home items.
Great discussions! I can't wait to take a closer look at some of these online mags.

... and on Ones King's Lane my favorite pick is the Hunters Return Service Bowl.

I do miss magazines like Domino and I haven't been able to throw any of them away. But, I also love Lonny and Rue and adore Surroudings (I've been a film buff all my life and I'm often inspired by set design)... I think there's room for both and I'm looking forward to checking out the other online magazines since I'm about to start redecorating my little in-law apartment.

I have a love for all things cashmere and a new cashmere throw or even cashmere travel socks would be delightful!

Thanks for the ideas and keep them coming! The internet can be a great thing!

To The Skirted Roundtable Ladies -

What a fabulous giveaway, I couldn't resist entering.

To me the most lovely part of OKL (which I have stalked since it's inception) is the relatively recent addition of their Tastemaker Tag Sales.

What design aficionado hasn't trawled through a luscious design book (being newlyweds in new york, my husband calls these books my "real estate porn"), dreaming of the day we too can have our pick of a range of antiques and beautiful hand curated items from a top interior designer? OKL allows us to realize this and all at a click away.

I loved reading about how Charlotte Moss has in her home pieces from some of her decorating idols, like Madeleine Castaing. Rather than having to go to an auction at Sotheby's, OKL makes hand picked pieces from our favorite design stars easily accessible to a design do-it-yourself-er, and gives us a story we will have for years to come (hopefully when we are writing our own design books...:)

My dream item for this reason would certainly be from a Tastemaker Tag Sale. I would have to say my weakness is for good lighting - good lighting absolutely makes a small space and makes everyone look gorgeous. I would use the voucher towards something with a patina - I love the sculptural brass empire lamps in the S.Fellman&D.Desmond Sale, and the antique brass sconces from Rela Gleason's current sale - the unexpected pink shades are divine - but there are droolworthy lighting options in every tag sale! I can already see them, mounted on either side of my fireplace, glinting off my collection of hotel silver, lighting up my apartment so it looks warm and cozy through the windows on a cold winters new york city night.

Always enjoy reading your blog.

xo

I love the variety at One Kings Lane. If I had to narrow down my choices, I would choose either the Kevin O'Brien Linen Pillows or the MicroCotton Bath Set in Moss. I am getting married in March, and we have to fill a house...

Since it is near Christmas, I might use part of the money to get the 4-Volume Children's Classics book set for my sister who is studying Children's Literature.

Congrats on your anniversary - your podcast is fascinating and very important to me to stay connected with a vibrant design world (not so much available here)!

Sadly, One Kings Lane doesn't like Canadians - it rejected my postal code and insists on a zip code. I bet they don't ship to Canada either. Darn! :(
