Whose bedroom is it?

This week, we are talking bedrooms - what we like, what works and who is it that admits she can't really make a bed.

From guys: "Is there no other way to make it good without 100 pillows?" Sell men by saying you can hide the unmade bed with the pillows. Better take a picture of the perfect pillow arrangement; some of us aren't so good with puzzles.

We had a great upholstered headboard made by Forsyth Fabrics in Atlanta, it's living it's second life in another room with a spread pinned over the shape. It's been great every day.

Non-matching nightstands for us.

You need a canopy for huge bedrooms. They just aren't cozy. I don't get it. How can a warehouse be intimate?

Men are guests in our wife's bedroom (if we are lucky), in fact we're guests in all of the rooms except maybe the garage.

Thanks for a great show.
I'm finally catching up today on Skirted Round Table postings after being away from your site awhile due to life, love and other mysteries! I always look forward to your great ideas, great discussions and great tips! I usually listen to you while doing something else... today it's preparing the house for a giant fete this weekend and the laptop is following me from room to room as I tweak! It's this mobile listening that had me wishing that you had a "Listeners Notes" section on your blog where you listed the name/links of the places/brands/etc you talked about. So many great tips today and not enough time for me to grab a pencil or sit down at the laptop and dash them down to check out later! Just wanted to share an idea for you to consider for multi-taskers like me!

By the way, I loved the post as always! Bedrooms are particularly difficult for me and it's the one room in the house I tend to go minimal & tres simple in the decor. On the bedside table issue, I'm a fan of matching French chevet's. Particularly charming to me are the chevets with the marble lining in the drawer used in the olden days for storing the chamber pot over night.

My own headboard is a 1930's room divider I reupholstered myself - after listening to Joannie's tip about the suggested height being 3 feet from pillows up and thin padding for modern lines, I measured out of curiousity and I was spot on on both issues! Score 1 for me!

Best Regards,
Toma

I'm a big fan of Restoration Hardware's banded bedding. Classic and beautiful and available in a huge variety of colors. I would swear that that first pic is RH bedding! I like duvet's with a mattelise folded at the foot of the bed. Flowers, candles and books are a must! No TV IMO

Great conversation, Ladies! I'm in the midst of my own master makeover and listened intently to your tips and advice. The tidbit attributed by Joni to Charlotte Moss--that a master bedroom should be the woman's boudoir that the man feels lucky to be invited into-- is something I heard too, many years ago, but didn't realize it came from Ms Moss. I completely, one thousand percent agree!!

Great one! My favorite interior designer for bedrooms is Miles Redd. The first photo of his bird cage bedroom in Domino has become iconic. I don't think you can beat Chinoiserie wallpaper and a great metal canopy bed. But then my blog is all about Chinoiserie so that is my style! Upholstered headboards just don't look as elegant to me or last as long. I just used the Italian Campaign Bed in my daughter's first apartment. It will last forever and look great. I am also a fan of Anne Selke's pagoda canopy bed which I am considering for my master bedroom. I think it's gorgeous.

I really needed to hear this edition of the"Skirted.." as I am (finally) evolving from my 20-year addiction to blue and white (ever since eyeing that famous Mario Buatta blue and white bedroom) to shades of red and coral with touches of sage and buttery yellow. Personally, not a fan of upholstered headboards as they can be a bit trendy--but love the Venetian scollop detailing. As for furniture, antique and vintage any day of the week when appropriate (I know it takes a lot more time to source); night stands--not matched, but unique and balanced on both sides of the bed. Just bought a '20's poudreuse in walnut (sexy legs) and right height. Because of Jones, a matellese coverlet (washable) with duvet. Thanks for prompting me to rethink some of my ideas and adjust accordingly. Love the radio show.

Bedrooms? I seem to have heard something about how the greatest book ever written about bedroom design is due to be released on October 2! I think it's called The Design Directory of Bedding......
Love to layer with a beautiful coverlet for instant impact and a great hide all. Glad to hear I am in good company :)
If no one was ever going to see my bedroom, it would be just like this:

king size mattress on the floor
all white sheets
all white duvet with white cover
movable nickle reading lamp
large flat screen tv on the wall
professional rolling rack for my clothes

On pillows, personally, I always love to switch it up & add or take away pillows depending upon how hectic life is at any point in time. (when we first had our son, it was to the closet with all the pretty pillows and just the two white standard ones laid down flat ;) when we seem to have more time on our hands, i bring the Euros back out for reading in bed... For clients I usually do it up and remind them that they can always take a way when the mood strikes...

loved all your suggestions/ ideas... megan, really love that website too!! i DO love using upholstered headboards. joni- I remember that PB toile fabric bedroom you did- LOVED it!!

another great one- you guys are the best!!!
xoxo,
lauren

Liberty Post - COMPLETELY agree with you. If you've ever slept on a mattress on the floor - with all white, crisp linens - THE sexiest way to sleep. Period.

I have a small bedroom - grey veined petite 18th fireplace mantle with an enormous French walnut mirror above to reflect the walnut chandelier - the walls and ceiling completely enveloped in Bennison Grey Roses along with the billowing curtains and two deep seated French bergeres - all in the Grey Roses. Sea grass covers the old wood floors - tiny French writing desk that doubles as a vanity-and the bed tables are two legged French walnut pieces with grey marble tops. A complete cocoon. I had the enormous 4 poster painted to match the French greige of the wall trim.

lOVE the yellow headboard and chocolate pillow!
Great roundtable! I love beds with canopies...especially with lots of wonderful, rich bed hangings. I dream of having a bed like that and being able to change it from a summer look to a winter look. Love lots of pillows...I have removing mine down to an art. LOL I can swoop three off at a time and replace three at the time...in one move. :-)
Thanks, Joni, for sticking up for wall paper. :-) I had to remove mine from my bedroom walls...it wasn't a good choice and was way too bold and dictated everything I did in that room. But I could see a bedroom done with a more subtle pattern...it really does cozy up that space. I do love some of the bedrooms shown in Charlotte Moss's Winter House and her Design Inspirations book.

Great roundtable! I can talk about bedrooms for hours!
I personally love upholstered beds the options are eternal, plus since I am a reader in bed, I love the comfort and support an upholstered bed can give.
Yes on the room with the zebra trunks! So different and FUN!
Thank you!
